(a) Research on materials (especially in the Chinese language) stored or written abroad (mainly, but not limited to Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam and other bordering countries) regarding the history, culture, thought and religion of China;

(b) Patterns and shifts in the imagery, rumors, and information about China in Western literature.
