A paper entitled “A Close Intercourse at the Empire’s Dusk: The Korea Official Jin Yunzhi’s Tianjin Mission” has been published in the 2nd issue of the Journal of Fudan University, 2010, in the column of “New Perspectives in Humanistic Studies”. It’s the 16th article to date published in this column.
A Close Intercourse at the Empire’s Dusk: The Korea Official Jin Yunzhi’s Tianjin Mission
Abstract: In 1882, a Korea official Jin Yunzhi was appointed as envoy to lead 38 selected students and craftsmen to Qing dynasty for learning western techniques. In China, he met many Qing officials such as Li Hong-zhang and talked with them about the Korea’s matters on port-open, which has gained attention of researchers. He saw the real situation of China’s achievement on machine manufacturing industry, which was not so focused till now but very valuable. Based on the materials written by Jin, this paper focuses on two issues: first is the Qing dynasty’s judgment and policy toward East Asia, and the second is the development of machine manufacturing industry and its situation in Late Qing period.
