Second-stage Research Projects of IAHS

The Second Stage of Research Projects of IAHS

In order to successively promote the research with own features, as well as considering the recent overseas and domestic developments in correlative fields, after extensive discussion by the Academic Committee of the institute and various experts, we, National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University, plan to intensively support the following five research fields in the year of 2008, through which the collaboration between overseas and domestic academia and our university is expected to be pushed forward. Thereinto, four are developed on the basis of the former research projects of 2007, as follows:

(1) Viewing China from Bordering Countries (second stage)

Especially encourage (a) researches on materials (especially in Chinese language) stored or written abroad (mainly, but not limited to Japan, Corea, Mongolia, Annam and other bordering countries) regarding the history, culture, ideology and religion of China; (b) to research the imaginations and cognitions of China in western literature and image materials.

(2) Understanding and Critiques of International Perspectives in Sinology (second stage)

Especially encourage (a) introducing and commenting the current researches of history, language, religion and culture of ancient China in Europe, America, Japan and Korea; (b) compiling catalogues and abstracts for Sinological works translated or introduced by Chinese academia from other countries during late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China; (c) critiquing and introducing the newest works of the international sinology.

(3) Interwoven Cultural History (second stage)

Especially encourage (a) demonstrative research on the cultural exchanges among Tokugawa-era of Japan, the Li dynasty of Corea and Qing dynasty of China; (b) the diffusions and influences of Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism and Islamism among different geographic areas of Asia in Early Modern Age; (c) the processes of accepting and rejecting exotic cultures by the native on the way toward modernization of East Asia countries.

(4) Literature and Imagery Materials regarding China Stored Abroad (second stage)

Especially encourage (a) the Chinese image in European paintings from 16th century to 20th century; (b) the Chinese image in the paintings of Japan, Corea, and Annam; (c) the history of ideas regarding the maps of Asia and various countries in Early Modern Age.

Moreover, we also plan to launch a new research field in 2008:

(5) Synthetical Researches on Religion, Ideology and Arts

This institute especially encourages the application of the following research projects: (a) the different presentations and historical context of Buddhist and Catholic arts in various countries; (b) the history of ideas regarding the images of prevalent arts; (c) the developmental history of the histories of religion, ideas and arts in China, and their general theories and methodology; (d) the history of image interpretation on ancient Confucian classics and ideas.
