The National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University (IAHS), the Institute for the Advanced Study of Asia of Tokyo University, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Göttingen, and  Department of History (LKSF Program), University of California, Berkeley invite applications from advanced graduate students for an intensive summer program in Studies of East Asian Arts, Religion, and History (June 23 – July 2, 2023) in Shanghai, China. Professors from prestigious institutions will provide seminars, each with a specific topic of their respective expertise. We will also arrange associated research activities to complement the lectures. The Program will end on July 2nd; dormitory rooms should be vacated by then.
The Program organizes visits to the Shanghai Museum or the Shanghai Library, local libraries, temples and churches as well as a visit to Jiangnan areas where significant cultural and architectural traditions are preserved. The chance to meet and exchange views with graduate students from Tokyo, Fudan, and other East Asian universities is also encouraged. Students are expected to submit an essay after the sixseminars.
The topic of this year’s seminar is " The History of Global History ".
1、 Prospective students
1)This program will accept 15 graduate students specializing in East Asian studies from universities in North America and Europe. Those who have passed their required Ph.D qualifying examinations and have started writing their dissertations are encouraged to apply. (The primary language of interaction will be Mandarin Chinese, and reading ability in Classical Chinese is also strongly recommended. It is imperative that graduate students have the necessary language training to engage in serious academic discussion in Chinese. Those with the equivalent of advanced Modern Chinese are invited to apply. )
215 graduate students specializing in East Asian studies from universities in China.
3 5-6 graduate students specializing in East Asian studies from universities in Japan and Korea. (The primary language of interaction will be Mandarin Chinese, and reading ability in Classical Chinese is also strongly recommended. It is imperative that graduate students have the necessary language training to engage in serious academic discourse in Chinese. Those with the equivalent of advanced Modern Chinese are invited to apply.)
2、Schedule
The workshop will be held in-person in Fudan.
June 23: 16:00-17:30   First meeting for all students and teachers
18:00-19:30 Evening meeting and dinner reception for Chinese and foreign students.
June 24 -June 29: seminar and research activities
June 30: Free time for students to prepare written essays
July 1: Small Group Meetings in the morning, Presentation of Student Certificates in the afternoon

4、  Cost
Room, board and the cost of the research visits will be provided by the IAHS. Students are expected through their universities to cover their own air-tickets and ground transportation from airport to Fudan University. Any necessary visa documentation will be provided by the Institute, but visa processing fees will not be covered.
 5、Certificate
A certificate of completion will be issued to all students who have completed the course.
6、 Application

2)For students studying in American Universities
