Western Primary Sources and China Studies

International Symposium on
Western Primary Sources and China Studies
May 22-23, 2010

The “Western Primary Sources and China Studies” Conference was held at Fudan Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies on May 21 and 23, 2010. This conference was mainly focused on the Western primary sources on China studies, to which Matteo Ricco was one of the main contributors. For one thing, China studies were never an isolated discipline that belonged to China exclusively. China studies have spanned across time, national boundaries and cultural confines. It has long preceded the globalization of which we are talking about today. Nevertheless, in spite of this “global” characteristic of China studies, few Western primary sources, recorded in languages other than English, have found their way into our perspectives in the past decades, or even centuries. These sources remain, as much as they were, a gold mine to be unearthed and exploited, which was a goal to which this conference aspired.
