MA, PhD in History, Fudan University, now associate professor in the National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies, Fudan University. Research interests are: modern Chinese intellectual history; culture exchanges between China and Korea in modern history; research on Yan Xing Lu. Publications include: “Observations on the Generation Gap among the May Fourth intellectuals according to the Argue of Youth and Old”, “A Close Intercourse at the Empire’s Dusk: The Korea Official Jin Yunzhi’s Tianjin Mission”, etc.
My doctoral specialty was modern Chinese intellectual history and my PhD dissertation concerns the generation gap among the May Fourth intellectuals. Being a member of IAHS, I become more and more interested in the research area of viewing China from the periphery, proposed by the institute. Thus I gradually shift my research focus to this field. The core idea of this very area is to break out of the limitation of traditional research patterns which only seeks or resolves China’s problems inside China itself. Furthermore, this study inspires a research method of using materials from the neighboring countries that were closely related to China in history to review China. For instance, in my recent research on the theme of Jin Yunzhi’s Tianjin Mission, I used the Korean materials Yan Xing Lu to talk about the problems such as the transformation of Qing government’s diplomatic strategies and the development of western science and technology in modern China. Shifting to an unfamiliar area is not easy, but the research methods are basically the same. Depending on the long term training in history, I believe I can do it well.
