Mahatma Gandhi foresaw the nonviolent civil rights movement in the U.S., and he laid the foundations in theory and practice for that movement.  Martin Luther King, Jr.’s successes were in no small measure due to Gandhi’s work in India.  However, later American interpretations of Gandhi’ssatyagraha ignored some of Gandhi’s central tenets and in doing so laid the groundwork for much of the chaos and disorder that has occurred in the Middle East since the Arab Spring. Gandhi’s vision remains solid—and widely disregarded.
