Buddhism originally as a foreign tradition was introduced to China and then became an important part of Chinese civilization. It has deeply reshaped the Chinese world of thought, daily life, and even political theories and practice. As a shared religion and ideology, Buddhism also acted as the mechanism for the “globalization”. Chinese civilization cannot be well understood or studied with ignoring the roles of Buddhism in the formation of Chinese culture and traditions. This special issue on history of Chinese Buddhism can be considered an important part of our attempts to promote Buddhist studies in China.
